WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration is planning to relax regulations covering endangered species before President-elect Obama can reverse them.
The regulations must be published Friday to take effect before Obama is sworn in Jan. 20. Otherwise, he can undo them with the stroke of a pen.
The Interior Department rushed to complete the rules in three months, over the objections of lawmakers and environmentalists. The rules eliminate the input of federal wildlife scientists in some endangered species reviews.
So... who wants some Spotted Owl souffle? I hear them's some good eatin'. I'm sorry I used my Burning of Berlin analogy already because it would be damn suitable here. Instead I'll have to fall back on the car wreck analogy instead. Watching the last months of the Bush administration, like driving past a fatality on the highway, you just can't pull your eyes away from the entrails and viscera smeared across the asphalt.
Last time it was the environment getting sold to gas and oil interests, now it's endangered species. I'm thinking long and hard about what's next. I'm supposing it has to be some amazingly gross violation of the separation of church and state. I want to guess, but my gut won't let me. I suppose, like the car wreck, I'll find out whether I like it or not...
