Selma Sierra - Selling out America's Parks

It's got to get worse before it can get better. Rather like Germany when the Americans drove home towards Berlin, the Bush administration is doing what it can to rape, pillage and plunder any remaining assets the country has before the handover. The latest offering to the oil and gas industries is BLM's platter of land adjacent to public parks:

Late on Election Day, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced a Dec. 19 auction of more than 50,000 acres of oil and gas parcels alongside or within view of Arches National Park and two other redrock national parks in Utah: Dinosaur and Canyonlands.

Yeah, on election day? Seriously, who isn't going to believe that it was released during the biggest public event in the hopes that people would over look it? Further Selma, the BLM's director for Utah, couldn't care less who she offends or what policies she ignores because basically no one is going to catch her with less than a few months left. She essentially laughed in the face of the federal coordinator in Utah for the Park Service. Her response?

''We added some tracts, sorry we didn't notify you. We can take up these concerns when we issue'' drilling permits.

Thank the gods the for-sale sign on our national lands is going down in a few months. Maybe it won't be too late to undo the damage this administration has done to the environment, unlike the damage that has been done to our economy and self-esteem.

And...what are people going to do? I happen to have 1000 miles of ocean between me and Florida, but if I lived in the States I'd be on my way to her office, where ever it is. She sounds like a serious piece of work and needs to be the object of a non-violent protest every single day and night. Then on to Utah to lay down in front of the machines. This is so outrageous, and so revolting.

What a shame that people like Selma Sierra, are EVER allowed to hold positions of responsibility at any level of government! The shortsightedness, lack of concern for things esthetic, and rampant propensity to cater to the GREED of the oil and gas industry, is sickening to me. It represents the archaic LACK of values of a century ago, which set the stage for the environmental chaos we are now on the brink of, if not already irrevocably engulfed in. The Bush Administration, and in particular, its minions, such as Ms. Sierra (what a shame she should have that surname, in light of what she stands for!), have done more to undermine environmentalism in this country in the last eight years, than any administration in the last eighty years. Thank goodness it's coming to an end; but not until THEY lay the foundation for yet more terrorism toward the planet. I only hope that upon taking the reigns of power, some of the first actions taken by the new administration, will include "cleaning house" at the BLM, & numerous other agencies, and AT LEAST for the immediate future, ridding our government of the likes of Ms. Sierra and her like-minded ilk. Hopefully President Obama will also see fit to reverse these actions of "The Criminal, Mr. Bush, and his extended gang of thugs.

I would like to say that before ANYONE goes on ranting and raving about how horrible a person SELMA SIERRA it I would first look at yourself and say, " How much do I know about oil and gas, about natural resources and their conservation, about state budget, about energy conservation, or even about the biological nature of that area of the world!" ......Now that you have taken a moment lets look at some fact about Ms. Sierra's past record. Wait do I know anything about that either.....think....do I. have I followed her career over the last few years? ......I think you are getting the picture.

For crying out loud she bares the name of one of the largest land conservation organizations in the world.

SO, before you announce to the world your lack of education make sure you understand a bit about the topic and the background. Thank you.

Lastly, I am a firm beleiver in making this world a better place with clean renewable energy...but the reality right now is that the American people are using far to much energy then we can create cleanly so unless you can convince 330 million people to lower their energy consumption or have a free and easy way to create energy without hurting the production levels of the economy please keep doing your best to bring light to negative situations that DO ACTUALLY hurt our environment, because the reality is that we are all here together right. Thanks again.

Selma Sierra is a partisan hack with no experience in actual environmental policy. They basically took a right-wing publicist and put her in charge of managing federal lands.

Check out her resume:

1987-1988 Deputy chief of staff for right-wing Republican Gov. Garrey Carruthers
1989-1993 Human Resources management at Interior
1993-1995 Press secretary for Ways & Means committee
1995-2001 Press secretary for conservative Republican Joe Skeen
2001-2003 Appointed to Dept. of Commerce for no apparent reason
2003-2004 Directed BLM communications office
2004- Somehow appointed acting chief of staff for BLM

Just because someone happens to have the name of an organization does mean they have anything to do with that organization.

I DO know something about fossil fuel extraction and the potential harm it can do to the environment and it ain't pretty. Ever hear the noise from an operating oil derrick? I've been told it can be pretty annoying. Ever see the effect on groundwater from an improperly installed petroleum well? I have.

Furthermore, this is not only and environmental issue, it is an issue about an administration in it's 11th hour selling off our country's natural resources - something that should be done with a bit more consideration than picking out a brand of toothpaste at the market.

To "t" above; Judging from the comments you've made here, I think I may have done a little more research on the subject of oil and gas than you have. For instance, it is greatly doubtful that this country would benefit SHORT TERM from any increased drilling in the shale deposits of Utah, Coloraodo and Wyoming. The experts have said that this would not be of any meaningful impact to our oil needs for 15-40 years. People, quit falling for the BS that we have been force-fed for fifty years!! Oil is on its way out, whether you believe it or not. Peak oil hit the U.S. in 1970; (this is a term to describe the apex of a resource's recovery numbers. IE: The highest flow rate from oil drilled in the U.S. was reached in 1970. Peak oil on the WORLD stage is believed by most experts, to have already been reached, as well, but much more recently. People at Unesco who research and gather information and statistics globally, show that when you consider population, increase in per-capita petroleum usage,& dwindling supplies of oil worldwide, the writing is on the wall- oil's days are numbered. Knowing this, I cannot see the logic of taking actions which will TRASH the good things about America, such as our as yet relatively untrashed National Parks and wilderness areas, in order to cull the dregs of a nearly dead resource. We have ignored what has needed to be done for DECADES: develop as quickly as all are collective energy allows us to, all the alternative sources, and work through the problems which need to be addressed toward that end. And all of us need to realize that it will take more sacrifice on our partrs to accomplish energy independe nce, which is the key to keeping the $1,000,000,000,000 (yes, one trillion dollars)we spend as a nation on foreign oil each year, in this country. But PLEASE do not believe the lies being perpetrated by the few who stand to benefit from trashing and polluting the wilderness, that drilling on the fence of Arches and Canyonlands is going to save our country now. Listen to old time oilman and natural gas trader, T. Boone Pickens. He says in his most recent book, that the course of action is clear. We need to develop wind, solar, geo thermal, ocean tides, amongst others, for the generation of power, and use natural gas for tranportation. We, as a nation, have HUGE reserves of natural gas, which is much cleaner than oil, and can be used to fuel our cars, once the cars are converted. To continue on our present course will lead us to future financial ruin.
