One foot off the cliff

The Times ran an article today that talked about why people weren't switching to Vista in droves. It was a pretty funny article because it gave individual vignettes of semi-anonymous users woes and crises. Later they revealed that these users were high-powered MS execs. Seems this information has come to light as a result of a class action suit against the Evil Empire resulting from the "Vista Capable" fiasco (in short - machines granted that moniker were either unable to run Vista graphics *or* were unable to run any software other than just the OS because... nothing was compatible).

I think it's funny, personally, that anyone - even an MS exec would think upgrading to Vista would be a good idea at all. Other than the "Ooooo Pretty" factor what else does it do that XP doesn't? I mean in a practical sense?

Here's what I need a machine to do:
1. Boot/Shutdown
2. Not crash in the process of booting or running (shutting down is optional unless it corrupts my drives)
3. Provide net access
4. Support my printer/ router/ camera/ flashdrives/ trackball
5. Play my games
6. Run my basic apps for word processing, image editing

That's it really. That's what I need a machine to do - sure there's more I'd like, but that's gravy in my mind. And if an OS can't suitably do all the necessities, then why the fuck would I want to use it?

But there's more... If I'm going to go through the hassle of getting a new OS installed, then I want it to take at most the same amount of RAM as the current OS, or less. Why would I want to spend more memory for the same capabilities?

Vista really doesn't offer me anything special that I'd prefer over XP. I even run 64bit XP so eh, again - nothing there in Vista-land for me in that respect either. Hell even with XP, I still use the "classic windows" look and feel, because I'm not interested in wasting even a nibble for flash that's not part of a game.

It took a long time for me to move from NT to 2k and even longer from 2k to XP (in fact I still have 2k machines around). I'm not fucking upgrading to Vista until I'm backed to the edge of the cliff with one foot wiggling in thin air... Half Life Episode 50? Fear Expansion XXIX? Unreal Tournament 2025? Dunno - but I'll post something when I get there...

Pfff, Your gloom and doom over Vista reeks of someone believing everything they read. I've had not issues from anything on Your list. I'll concede that 1GB of RAM is inadequate for running Vista smoothly but as cheap as RAM is now I'm not bothered by it AND when has ANY new version of Windows NOT required more RAM and HDD space than the prior version?

The only real issues I've had in over 6 months with Vista are:

1)- Adobe's incompetence when it comes to making sure their Photoshop CS3 installer works on a 64-bit OS.
2)- My workplace's incompetence at making sure they have the 64-bit version of the VPN available for download.

In fact, as a user of a Wacom tablet, Vista does a LOT for me that even the tablet PC version of XP couldn't. (It also does a lot of those same tablet features *better*).

Now I realize that I'm in the underwhelming majority of people who use a tablet, but even with all the high-end software I use, I've only encountered those 2 insurmountable hurdles. YET... on the Vista32 machine I have on the other port of my KVM, both Photoshop and my company's VPN work flawlessly. In fact, Vista's been a hell of a lot more stable for me so far than my XP boxes EVER were.

I can appreciate familiarity with an existing product as much as the next guy but don't think just because You hear some people complaining about something new means that it's a total pile of crap. People bitch about their Macs or PCs all the time without the benefit of a new OS. It's only when something is different that anyone pays attention.

Actually I know a few people last year that re-rolled their OS from Vista to XP. It's just that the article was amusing from the standpoint that if MS execs got burned, what did they expect would happen to the public?

Not everyone is savvy enough to know what hardware they need to run Vista, and to label a computer for the masses as "Vista Compatible" when it's insufficient... well the lawsuit speaks for itself.

The bottom line is for the 1337 user it's not a problem... but for Mom n Pop it is.

I'll agree with the Mom n' Pop statement. While I'm happy using Vista, when I had to get a new system for my folks this past week, I opted to have Dell put XP on it rather than Vista. While the PC I configured for them is quite capable of running Vista, since they don't use a tablet and don't game there's no compelling reason to switch them away from what they are comfortable with.

Besides, by the time they need something to replace this new machine, there will no doubt be another version of Windows out. The less time spent doing Family Tech Support (even for PEBKAC errors) the better. ;)

You want descriptions? Get a dictionary. Better go waste time reading the news or play some games on Yahoo or MSN or some shit like that.
