The Deciding Factor

taken from a comment on a previous post...

Honestly, the entire primary system is pretty damn unfair to the voters. The debates are decided by the 2 main parties, the system is designed to keep out 3rd parties, the super delegates (on the dems side) are a throwback to shady back room politics, and most of the country is forced to live by the choices of the first couple primaries. Think of how many candidates have dropped out already without ever giving the rest of the country a chance to support them.

I noticed this year when there were a frenzy of early primaries and wrangling over election dates. I can understand that states want to grab some of this attention, and the associated money. I can't help, however, to think back to the whole Gore/Bush election where the last states to report were the ones that held our focus, and breath.

Admittedly I can't recall any time where the last states to vote really served as a 'tie breaker' per se, but it doesn't mean it can't happen. On the other side should all the polls open in all states at the same time? Would that be more "fair"?

Perhaps as we move into a more electronic age that will be possible. Will we be able to vote from our computer someday? With improvements in security, fingerprint technology it might actually be more representative - but that opens so many avenues of discussion I can hardly begin to address them all.

In general, primaries are decided on or before the super Tuesday mass primary. This year is a little different, and is more the exception rather than the rule. My point still stands though: So far, there have been less than 1/4 of the states able to give their opinion, but we've narrowed it from 15 candidates down to 5 or 6. After today, with around 30 states down, we'll be down to 3 or 4. The opinions of the later states might still matter, but they don't even get the option of picking from the full list.

I mean, seriously, why do we think the New Hampshire voters should have so much control over the elections? Or any of the other early states? It doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sure it has to do with what the parties want, not just the states. One primary in one fell swoop does nothing for any momentum going into an election year. Let's say Huckabee wins Republican. Far fewer people know wtf he stands for compared to now when there's really only three to choose from.

In fact, I wonder if later states mean more, as opposed to less. People early on maybe would have not vote for Romney had they known he'd not make it. Later states won't throw away votes for him, theoretically.

Likewise, I'm sure there are candidates with far less money, and campaigning in just a few states takes less of our and their money, and maybe overall less as you don't have to somehow cover in short order all the important states. Right now, who is spending money on the later states in the Dems? Just two people.

Really, I think it all has to do with momentum going into the election year. All of these primaries and excitement turn into more exposure and interest. I mean, it's political reality television, no? It gets people impassioned and they play along by voting, and people fall off the island every few weeks.

You want descriptions? Get a dictionary. Better go waste time reading the news or play some games on Yahoo or MSN or some shit like that.
