Kickin' Pc gamers to the curb

It used to be that "computer games" required a "computer". You know in the classical sense, like one with a keyboard and maybe some sort of pointing device. Something you could pop the hood on and add maybe update your RAM or video card. Basically none of this console shit where you buy a pre-packaged box and play on it until they make you throw it out and buy a new one. Really it was something, because computers were the only things that could really do innovative things like wire-frame graphics and greater than 16 colors.

Eventually the PC became a solid platform for all sorts of new games and types of playing that required more than a 4-way rocker switch or joystick and a big red button. But now...? Game manufacturers have basically written off PC users as a market because it's *expensive* to design and write a real video game.

Ok, I admit, games like the FEAR and Half-Life series basically raised the bar to a level where it's hard to compete. But when games that do stand a chance of making a promising impression come out and then fucking blow it, it makes me want to take a stick to the management that set the priorities. Yeah, I'm talking about you Epic, and yeah I'm talking about Unreal Tournament 3. It's close, so fucking close we can all taste it - all your PC customers that brought your series to a fourth release know you kicked us in favor of the freekin' console release.

Items of Mass Stupidity:

  • Remapping the console key from the standard ~ to F10. Why, gods oh why?
  • A seriously gimped list of key bindings. Toss weapon? Hot-key phrases? You need to edit the damn ini.
  • X and Y scale factors set to different values... because it's too hard for console gamers to push up and down compared to left and right. BUT WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH A PC?
  • No linux server release.
  • No web admin for servers.
  • User files stored in some gods-fosaken directory under "documents and settings"

I dunno, I'm too despondent to add more items, but seriously - none of these things would have taken more than a day of testing. All these things were standard in previous releases, and yeah, any real UT player is used to editing their ini for certain details... but come on - for stuff like toss weapon? What the fuck were they trying to prove?

They were trying to prove that they could in fact blow their load while producing a game on all major consoles and release them either at the same time or in very close proximity. In fact I was priveleged enough to catch commercial for UT 3 on the TV last night! No, not for PC...but rather the miserable PS3.

Tell me. How do you play a FPS with a controller?

There once was a time where computers were so much more powerful than any console on the market and therefore PC games had a major advantage of being over the top compared to the meek limitations of yesteryear's consoles like PS1, or N64 where you had to be extremely creative in order to stuff everything into the limit of your cartridge or be playable on the low-end 3d hardware of the day.

Nowadays they're building consoles with as much power as a mid-level gaming PC and game publishers want to see the title released on every platform imaginable ... not so that it can be better.. but that it will sell more - which is what its all about.. UT as we knew it might very well be dead for the sake of mass marketing and exposure. The fact that they went out of their way to make the UI console friendly and remove every useful configuration option shows this. The fact that they went out of their way to make stupid over the top maps to attract these console gamers shows this. At least they tried to bring back some of the original UT in the form of classic map remakes and such. However, what pisses me of the most, are the bleeding obvious flaws that stand out to any idiot who's played the game more than 10 seconds..

You hit a character... any character, they each play the same generic "GaAAAHH" sound whether they be Liandri, beast, human, male or female. That one just baffles me to all hell.

The server browser, history, favorites is another fine example of idiocy.. Thanks to shitty consoles you cant see a THIRD of the information that was once visible !

And why in pete's fucking sake does it have to load a main menu every time you quit? Why can't it return you where you left off? Has that suddenly become a lost technology to be recoved perhaps in 3,000 years by our future decendants?

This could have been its own post.. but well, whatever. We like to vent and I know I'm not alone.. Too bad noone else really gives a shit.. If EPIC did, they would have done their core loyalty base a favor by not releasing a peice of shit product.

At least in the past, the console UT games were spin-off's.. sigh.

but I have faith that eventually, as with all games, it will be updated and fixed as time goes on,, hopefully long before it has been obsoleted.

You want descriptions? Get a dictionary. Better go waste time reading the news or play some games on Yahoo or MSN or some shit like that.
