But it's what they really want...

Actually, no, it's not what we want, and somehow even with sagging sales the American automotive industry keeps pushing crap at consumers.

In an 'oh so witty' response to the presidential candidates call for better fuel economy the car manufacturers insisted that it wasn't something the public was truly interested in. The quote ran something along the lines of "well what Americans want to buy is bigger engines, more towing power and greater seating capacity." Well I suppose the logic here is that if one out of the three statements might be true, then they all might be true.

Still, at over $3 a gallon they're thinking we want less fuel efficient cars? And what about the statement of "towing power". Towing what? There are multitudes of US residents sitting around lamenting the fact that their current vehicle isn't buff enough to tow... their boats? their campers? their trailers with matching snowmobiles? I dunno personally, I don't have any of the above, nor, for that matter, do any of my friends.

At some point you might think that common sense could prevail. After all, if the American car manufacturers really made cars the public wanted, don't you think that maybe, just maybe, they might be able to sell a few?

Anyone that knows anything about power output gets a diesel engine for towing - not a gasoline engine. High powered gasoline engines are for people who want to show off. Diesel is for people who want to "git 'er done". With a diesel you get much more bang for the buck. AND, when push comes to shove, McD's may have some leftover fryer oil you could use.

In regards to the diesel engines you are correct, they do make more torque than their gasoline counterparts.

The problem with diesels NOW is that the fuel is in many places (here) more expensive per gallon than gasoline is. Biodiesel here is also more expensive than conventional petroleum based diesel.

Considering that most diesel engine options in pickup/utility trucks cost on average of about $7000.00 more than their gasoline brothers. One must look at return on investment and consider how much longer it will take to pay back that difference given the current cost of diesel fuel and considering that most do not get much better fuel mileage than conventional gasoline engines do.

Since I tow a 28' enclosed trailer quite a bit I checked into all this when I was considering getting rid of my Suburban for an F-350 or 3500 GMC with diesels.

The ROI for diesel vs gasoline (at current price differentials gas vs diesel) that I came up with was well over 7 years. :(
