The war on families

I admit I'm a bit astonished by this one. Apparently yet another collateral issue in this war is the status of child custody. When a divorced parent is called to service they often look to their former spouse to care for their child while they are serving half the world away. These are supposed to be temporary arrangements where things are returned to their original state when their tour of duty is over.

But that's not happening.

What is happening is that service members, men and women, who were originally granted primary custody of their child are returning to find their children are now deemed "better off" with the other parent. Why? Because that's where they've been for the last however-many months. Courts have been finalizing these "temporary" arrangements as being in the "best interest" of the child, and even when the law reminds family judges that service people are protected from lawsuits while they are serving, courts are pushing back saying that the interest of the child supercedes all.

So the net result is that service people are at risk of losing access to their children, and perhaps even any access to their children at all if they have a vindictive former spouse. What is to stop an "Ex" from claiming that the service member is now an unfit parent because of the experience of service in a war zone? What if the service member is injured?

It's nice how the hawks like to portray this war as something that America needs to "win". Every time someone says "hey we need to end this" they're called defeatist or unpatriotic. The problem is those people aren't the ones who are really making the sacrifices. If those people are so dedicated to supporting the troops, perhaps they need to ensure our service people are guaranteed a return to the children they left behind. Or maybe those people need to explain to the Mom who no longer has her child at home why this "war" was more important than her family...

Yea, the legal system sucks in most ways regardless of what the reason. This is a perfect situation to utilize the largest unified work/labor force in the United States as a militia - our State and Federal prisoners.

The latest figures from the DOJ (published 2005) say that there are just under 2.2 million inmates amongst the Federal and State Prisons. That does NOT include county/local jails.

Thats one helluva army isn't it?

The only question with that is - what do you do with disturbed / deranged / violent people ~after the war? Could we bring them back home again? Could we even trust them with guns and explosives in the first place?

That's the brilliant part of the plan, u235! There is no "after the war"! If our army is made up entirely of violent criminals, then the public will oppose efforts to bring the troops home, because we want those guys as far away as possible. So the war can go on forever.

AbbaZabba is right.. we could just deploy them everywhere like our soldiers are now.

But I say lets take it one step further. What if we could make them like Robocops? Perhaps a Borg collective? If we made them drones then we could use them as replacements for our men and women stationed around the world and finally bring them home!

Drones dont have feelings so they wont feel badly, get depressed, suffer low moral and self worthlessness when they hear all the negative press about them while they're away from home giving their lives daily in the fight to keep peace in very troubled regions - as they protect the very rights of those who talk badly about the war and our government while in conflict.

The left, the French, the Canadians could bitch and moan for decades about any future conflicts and our new drone soldier's morals and feelings can't be affected in the slightest. No more worries with welcome home parties, no tearful send-offs.

Yes bman, its awful we want our soldiers back home with their families instead of dieing for a useless cause, and then losing their kids when they come back to our bs justice system. They aren't protecting our freedom, Iraq has never been a threat to OUR freedom. Its a fucking oil resource, nothing more, just like the rest of the middle east.

But hey, its ok according to you cause our soldier deaths number less than deaths caused by crime in the US. Why worry about our country's issues and instead fuck around in areas we don't belong. Makes perfect sense.

Yea, Iraq has never been a potential threat to the US.

I guess you forget about the Nuclear reactor they had built in the early 1980's. You know, the one that was full of nuclear warheads and they were threatening to shoot them at us, Israel, Kuwait and anybody else they could find. They didnt bother hiding the nuclear facility because they didnt think anyone had the balls to go take it out.. but Israel proved them wrong - they took it out one sunny afternoon.

Then he invades kuwait, then murders 100's of thousands of kurds, then he starts making bio weapons again.. wow.. then he's funding Al-Qaeda and offering them a home.. yea you're right, I guess they werent really a threat to us afterall.

I guess his constant destabilizing of the region wouldnt eventually spill over into our country would it?

The problem we have here is people are too short-sided to really dive into a topic and look at the regional and global impact of a situation long-term rather than just looking at this whole thing so short term.

lol, some awesome points there.

Lets see....they had a nuclear power plant 20 years ago but nothing when we kicked their asses the last couple times......definite threat :P

There is no evidence at all that Hussein was in league with Al-qaeda, in fact most analysts and intelligence agencies think it was the opposite.

He had bio weapons and other WMDs until we stopped that in the first war with them. And once we were in their the second time there was no evidence he had any more.

Anything other imaginary threats to our freedom we should be worried about?

Make a new rant sometime and we can debate it, Im always up for a good debate. In the meantime, please try to see further than the end of your nose when dealing with foreign problematic dictators like Saddam. The long term effects he would've had on the region would not be seen for many years. Fallout still occurs from his all previous antics. Situations like this aren't won overnight. Its a fact of life.

However, if you live in the world of instantaneous gratification and would prefer tackling issues that can be resolved more quickly, please focus your attention on fixing the problem here in the US starting with our elected officials - which will then trickle down into our court systems, judges who write law from the bench and all the other issues that need detailing right here at home. Its real simple to fix if people would quit electing these tools every few years. But then again.. only a small majority of us even vote... yet everyone likes to bitch, go figure.
