Their nuts are tied together (Managers)

So, tell me why it is that when someone gets promoted to a managerial position they absolutely, positively can't fire some incompetent asshole that THEY chose to hire? Sure they can fire peons beneath them. They can fucking fire them in gobs and handfulls. They can even happily setup mass execution-style firings but if they gotta touch someone who's even remotely a manager (multiple levels under them) it takes a fucking act of god to get rid of them.

How many times have you heard or seen competent technical persons get laid off or fired and the ass-munch that managed the group just go on like nothing ever happened? What the hell happened to being responsible for your department? What the hell happened to leading from the front-line? It doesn't exist today, I'm beginning to doubt it ever existed except for a few rare people who are now legendary figures in history (Rommel for one, Patton for another).

It seems to me that once a manager is hired he becomes a part of this huge web. This web connects the nuts of all the managers in the company. If one were to get yanked, they'd ALL get castrated at the same time. It's fucking astonishing to see someone so fucking worthless in charge with EVERYONE in the company knowing it and no one in a position of power doing a thing, no matter what it's actually costing in wasted time and effort. Apparently it's more important to maintain the myth that they never made a mistake in the first place, than fire the jerk at the core of why their work is late, expensive, or just fucking wrong.

You reach a certain level of professional cynicism when you see entire departments of grunts fired, people who are actually useful, productive members of the company and society and the loser at the top - who makes the salary of 5 grunts combined - get kept on. To do what? Fuck up the next project of course.

In a few rare instances they do get promoted out of harms way, but why keep them in the first place?

Yeah, if there's one thing for certain... I'm not management material. I don't care, no matter who I hired to do what, if they sucked I'd can their ass faster than I hired them. But that's just me.

Inertia of the powerful. Those that have power enjoy their underlings. Their minions. Even worthless ones. For the most part, as a manager, you're duty is to keep your team moving, show up in meetings, and find a way to assign all blame to others.

If something is wrong with his group, it's the individuals fault. If somethings, right, it's his managerial skill. Thus, he can not be blamed for any problems.

So, then he shows up in pointless meetings to demonstrate how important he is.

From there, all he has to do is keep his team going. Hire new people. Fire people. And occasionally say some inane platitude that makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy.

There is no stopping a manager. Even bad ones have a certain Eliot Ness quality about themselves, because the position in so difficult to point blame at.

The only real concern of a manager is major restructuring. Which is when outside consultants come in, say the management is the problem, and fires the entire managerial staff. But such things happen very very rarely.

The Peter Principle has been proved time and time again. Managers in most large businesses are just the most obvious examples.

You want descriptions? Get a dictionary. Better go waste time reading the news or play some games on Yahoo or MSN or some shit like that.
