The Card The Boy Scouts Had Up Their Sleeve

I wondered why the Boy Scouts, a rapidly dwindling group of quaintly old-school principles would jump on the gay-rights card, but here is the answer...

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. (AP) -- Make room, guys. The girls are coming to the Boy Scouts of America's national jamboree.

Hundreds of female participants will be among the more than 40,000 Scouts and leaders attending the national gathering that occurs every four years. The jamboree runs July 15 to 24 at the Summit outdoor adventure site in southern West Virginia.

The girls are part of the Scouts' youth development program called Venturing. It started in 1998 and involves members of both sexes ages 14 to 20. Many of their activities involve physical challenges and travel, making it especially attractive to older teens.

Because for every homophobic conservative out there, there's two dozen girls looking to join a group that does more than sell cookies. Frankly it's fucking brilliant and I never saw it coming. I suspect a few more decades will see "boy" and "girl" dropped from scouting altogether. I, for one, won't be sorry to see it go.

Boy/Girl Scouts of America becomes Youth Scouts of America? That wouldn't be a terrible name, and I don't recall anything about scouting that was inherently gender-specific to begin with. The only potential pitfall I can see with older scouts is chaperones having to be mindful of scouts making out on camping trips, but that's not too different from church lock-ins or any other group activities for teens/tweens.
