One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others

Even before you see their pictures you can immediately get the sense from just reading their names: Dias Kadyrbayev, Azamat Tazhayakov, and Robel Phillipos, yes one of these things is not like the others.

BOSTON (AP) ? Lawyers for a man charged with lying to investigators after the Boston Marathon bombings are asking a federal judge to release him from jail, saying he had nothing to do with the deadly bombings and isn?t a flight risk.[..]

??This case is about a frightened and confused 19 year old who was subjected to intense questioning and interrogation, without the benefit of counsel, and in the context of one of the worst attacks against the nation,?? lawyers Derege Demissie and Susan Church wrote. ??The weight of the federal government under such circumstances can have a devastatingly crushing effect on the ability of an adolescent to withstand the enormous pressure and respond rationally.??

Phillipos was charged last week with lying to investigators about visiting bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?s college dorm room on April 18, three days after the bombings. Two other friends were charged with conspiring to obstruct justice by taking a backpack with fireworks and a laptop from Tsarnaev?s dorm room.

It's gauche and tasteless, but when you look at the pictures there's more to distinguish Robel from the other two besides the fact that his last name doesn't end in a 'v'. For being in the wrong place at the wrong time there's a good chance this guy will wind up with eight years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. Now *that* is a tough break.

It's doubtful that Dzhokhar will do anything to step up and deny association with his buddies (assuming that Robel even knew him) but then this is someone who decided that it was OK to kill and maim innocents in his own hometown. I don't think you can't expect much from the morally bankrupt. As things go, Robel wasn't in the blast, but the fallout will damage him the rest of his life, even if he is discovered to be unassociated. His picture, his name are permanently up there as part of a trio related to a devastating act of inhumanity.

Were it my say I would take all of Dzhokhar's high-profile lawyers and assign them to his buddies. That would be justice, but I doubt a high-flying twat like Judy Clarke would be interested. After all defending a friend of a bomber just doesn't have the same cache. It's not like she's in it for her conscience either, she's just there to burnish her rep, to fight the government by finding a loophole to keep an admitted piece of evil off death row.

But back to Robel. Tough break kid, your life is screwed. You don't get the veteran lawyer, you don't get your anonymity back. All you get is a double helping of suckage. Better luck next time.
