Humanitarian of The Week Award Goes To...

... Arlan Kaufman and his wife Linda Kaufman! C'mon down folks! YOU WIN!

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas husband and wife who ran a psychotherapy practice went on trial on Tuesday on charges that they kept mentally ill people as slaves, forced them to perform sex acts on videotape and then billed Medicare nearly $1 million for the "therapy."

Prosecutors charged that Arlan Kaufman, 68, and his wife Linda Kaufman, 62, spent 18 years taking advantage of patients entrusted to their care. The couple ran a residential care facility in Newton, Kansas, where they worked with at least 20 mentally ill individuals from 1980 until 2004.

...

Authorities are seeking to prove that while the couple was billing relatives and insurers for therapy, rent, utilities and food, they were forcing the residents to engage in hard manual labor in the nude on a farm the couple owned outside of town.

Prosecutors charged the residents were also forced to engage in a variety of sexually explicit acts, including masturbating, fondling each other and shaving each other's genitals, much of which was videotaped.

Patients were physically injured or restrained if they resisted, authorities charged.

...

The Kaufmans submitted just under $1 million in claims to Medicare from 1991 through 2000 and were paid $216,906, authorities said.

Defense attorneys for the Kaufmans declined to comment. The couple faces more than 200 years in prison if convicted of all the charges.

Holy crap, kids, what the fuck were gran'ma and gran'pa thinkin'? Eighteen years? You can live with yourself that long and continue to be a twisted and depraved leech on society? That's some gumption, I tell ya.

From the crematory in Georgia that left bodies to rot on their property to the lovely couple above, the world continues to get shafted by complete idiots and deviants who have no true goal in life but to fullfill their own needs.

(warning - careening off into another topic all together)

Yes folks, this was a married man and woman, who - by all accounts - should be the moral penacle of society. I mean - as a man and a woman, they're allowed to wed each other. They can have children. They can adopt because "only a man and a woman can provide a loving and caring environment".

They live in the heart-land - the Mid-West - THE BIBLE BELT; where moral upstanding is worn on the sleeve and everyone has a flag in their front lawn, to which they insist that everyone else pledge "Under God", damn it.

They were more than likely someone's grand-parents. But maybe not. I mean - could you imagine the conversations? "How was work today, gran'ma/pa?" ... "Oh not bad, we just took in a young boy with severe retardation and a huge cock."

And even still - this was a couple. They both arrived at the conclusion that this was the correct way to treat people. Either that, one of them was abusive and controlling so much that the other went along with it for almost a quarter of a century.

At some point, it had to cross one of their minds that maybe, just maybe, this was not right. And if it didn't, I give up.

The leap they made was the rationalization of other people as non-human, or less than human. Once you bridge that mental gap, this type of behavior is not that difficult to achieve. Once you can make them into something unlike yourself, detach yourself from any similarity to them, you can do anything to anybody.

You wouldn't bat an eye at a horse being used to pull a plow. Or forcing a bull to impregnate a cow. I'm sure that's exactly the same manner these two people rationalized it. I believe the correct term for it is dehumanization.

Truly sick.

I'd go the other way - once you believe yourself above all others (due to either a personal mandate "I'm better than everyone else" or a mandate from another source "God tells me I'm right") then justification isn't an issue. I'd put money on it that these folks treated animals damn well, noting that they owned a farm and there weren't any animal cruelty charges mentioned.

The thing (sadly enough) that I find most astonishing is that they made so much money out of it. I mean forcing a disadvantaged person into slavery and abusing them is pretty much a world-wide norm. Making a financially successful business out of it tho... well that takes skill.

I suppose the truely sad thing about this is the total adbication of the families of the people involved. In all those years they never once got involved enough to find out what was going on... basically they paid these people so they didn't have to worry any more.

You are only reading this from what the media has printed. You should do some more research on this before you jump on something like this.

These people came to their house because they were not able to stay at other homes. The residents in these homes were not retarded either. They were nudist who were seeking treatments in psychotherapy. Arlan himself is a nudist and they did nude therapy. They didn't strap them to plows and have them do hard labor.

and the videos are of therapy sessions, not of everyone having sex.
