New Orleans: Chris Rock is right

I'm not a Chris Rock fan, but he speaks the gospel when he says there are n***as and there are black people. Case in point:

"NEW ORLEANS - National Guard troops in armored vehicles poured into New Orleans on Thursday to curb the growing lawlessness that included shots fired at helicopters airlifting people out of the Superdome and carjackings of buses helping with evacuations.

The operation to bus more than 20,000 people to the Houston Astrodome was suspended temporarily because of those reports, a spokeswoman for Harris County, where the Astrodome is located, said Thursday.

“We were told they are shooting at Chinook helicopters and the operation has been put on hold until daylight,” said Gloria Roemer.

The military helicopters are being used to take evacuees to the staging area where buses are waiting to take them to Houston. "

Ok, bad enough your ignorant, stupid ass is stealing tvs, jewelry, and other things you can't use, but now you're shooting at HELICOPTERS????! Are you kidding me?

I didn't think it would come to this, but the National Guard needs to be ordered to shoot civilians. They need to send a force in there and clear that place out. Anyone caught carrying a weapon or caught in the act of stealing non-essentials should be shot on sight, tagged and left there. Anyone who doesn't want to be rescued, leave them. Disease, heat and hunger/thirst will get them eventually.

This is ridiculous and embarrassing (as an American and a person of color) but sadly, not surprising. My mom reminded me that despite being a vacation hotspot, New Orleans and its residents are extremely poor. That doesn't excuse the amoral and stupid behavior, but I suppose when you weren't a decent person before tragedy, we can't expect you to act like a decent person post-catastrophe.

We have a house down there (had) and family. They all got out and we figure the house is gone, but I really feel for all those people who tried to leave and couldn't. To those who are still walking around being morons and hampering efforts, I hope you succomb to the elements or a bullet.

That is chilling. Although the ACLU would have a cow, the good of the community should outweigh the "rights" of those that have taken to lawlessness.

Shooting anyone who is armed just on principle is about as bad of an idea as the assholes who are currently using weapons to unjustly rob people. How the hell does Your average Joe on the street have any chance of protecting himself from one of those bastards if they are completely unarmed? Steven Seagal or Jackie Chan might be able to but could You?

Maybe if more of the upstanding people in New Orleans had the means to present a united front of military strength against such chaos then things would be a bit different there now. There are lots of different kinds of aid that are needed in these situations: food, water, shelter, medication and don't for an instant think that security isn't a basic need or right.

Nurses and rescue workers have jobs of their own that need doing. Armed citizens who lack the skills needed for such work would be a valuable asset in helping protect such people or escorting others to areas where they can get help.

Not all militias are full of crazed reactionaries. Following 9/11 many such groups were called upon in a Patriotic capacity to aid law enforcement in various ways around the entire country.

There's more I'd say, but I'm too agitated to bother right now...

Well I'm of the opition that if you let assholes have access to guns then they'll just BE assholes with guns. Personally I don't see any reason in our society today to own a weapon, no matter what you have it's not going to compare to what the government can lay down - so fuck that revolution bullshit, the days of canons and muskets are long gone.

Anyway, LA was chock full of guns and nuts, I'm just rather surprised they didn't go Mad Max until now.

In principle I'd agree - if some asshole is shooting at something that can waste them flat, well it's time to put a little Darwin into their gene pool...
