Oil prices - forget about gasoline prices

Wow. Watched a show on the Science Channel last night about oil. I learned a few things. Now I'm mad at myself for being so shallow by bitching about gasoline/diesel prices. I learned that oil is in everything.. vaseline, cosmetics, lotions, most all plastics, steel, rubber, vinyls, nylon etcetera etcetera. I never would have guessed that even Aspirin and many medicines are derived from crude oil - which shocked me. They claim that of all the oil production in the world that only 50% of it is actually used for fuels, the rest of the barrel is used for everything else the world produces.

-Man made fibers: polyester, nylon, acrylic

-Acetylsalicylic acid: (ASA) is the active ingredient in many of the well-known, over-the-counter pain relievers

-Most soapless detergents are made from oil products. The soapless detergents include powders and liquids used to wash clothes and dishes in a dishwasher. Some are made using petrochemicals, while others are made using alcohols and ethylene oxide that are petrochemical products.

-Many pigments, dyes, solvents, plastic paints, and paint additives, inks and markers.

-Fertilizers, pesticides

I could go on and on, but this blog isn't large enough to list everything.

After watching that show and realizing the impact of oil on literally *anything* we touch throughout the day made me realize now more than before that we need to shut these politicians up and start looking for more oil.. but NOT for gasoline as much as for everything else we use day to day. Oh we could easily get rid of using oil for transportation fuel by using other sources however there is no way in hell we can avoid using oil for everything else. Wow.

I've said the very same thing for years. We really need to find other sources for these products and for fuel. There are other sources for many, but with petroleum so cheap for so long, no one has put much effort into developing them.

We don't need to find more oil, we need to start looking outside the box.

I guess what I need to know is how much oil is consumed in making these products. Does it take a whole drum of oil just to make face cream or just a tablespoon. The other question I have is how much can we recycle from used product? I recycle my used oil and plastics.

But yes, for now we're totally dependent, and pretty much screwed.
