Fuel efficient cars aren't cheap

So my neighbor tells me yesterday he's going to trade his 04 Dodge truck in on a smaller more fuel efficient pickup. He works construction and carries a lot of tools around to and from jobsites. He wants to save some money. His truck is now paid off. I asked him how many miles he drives each year and he's averaging 16,000 miles or just over 1300 miles per month. His truck gets 14mpg now. The best fuel mileage we could find in a pickup truck was 25mpg, at a cost of just over $35,000. So now he's using about 90 gallons a month at 4.00/gal for a $360.00 fuel bill and no truck payment. He wants to buy the new truck so he will only use 52 gallons a month at 4.00/gal for a $208.00 fuel bill. He thought that was pretty good until he realized that his truck payment is just over $550.00/month for the next 4 years, plus his insurance increase for the new vehicle. For this new truck to even be break-even for his budget he'd have to be driving 2x his current monthly mileage.

Going green is going to take some time.

Fuel might not be over $4 / gal if people that didn't really need behemoths drove something smaller. Think about how many big pick-ups and SUVs you see driving with a single driver, dressed in obviously business attire driving during a typical M-F, 9 - 5er rush hour.

For example, there is a chick at work (in an office) who is so petite she probably couldn't carry more than 20 lbs of tools. Hell she practically needs a ladder to get in and out! Her reason for needing a huge truck? She lives in the hills and needs 4-wheel drive in the snow.

She can drive what ever she wants, but she is they type of person I do not want to hear complain. I do feel sorry for your friend and anyone that needs a big vehicle for their livelihood.

Imho there's an enormous difference between someone who just *wants* a big vehicle for the status and someone who actually needs it to make their living. There's no reason people who make their money using their big-engine vehicle (i.e. lawn services, plumbers, contractors, pavers, movers, etc.) should get the money ripped out of their pockets.

Fuck the economic stimulus bullshit - how about the government giving these people some of their money back or -better- not taking it in the first place? Let commercial businesses get a break on the fuel taxes, or at least a refund.

There's no reason they should have to bear the brunt of government supported oil's greed.
