Cache

The next news anchor or reporter that I hear mispronounce the word 'cache' will be promptly stabbed in the face repeatedly. Im sick ... SICK to death of hearing them pronounce it cash-ay instead of cash. A quick check at good ole merriam webster would be in order for them.

Pronunciation: 'kash
Function: noun

I honestly don't know if it's true, but I heard one explanation of why the media say it 'kash-ay'. The explanation goes as follows:

The media get their information from soldiers. Soldiers use the word "kash" to refer to a CSH or 'Combat Support Hospital'. So to distinguish those buildings from a pile of weapons, they add the -ay.

Personally, I think it's bullshit. Regardless of reasoning, they are incorrectly pronouncing a word. It's not preference. It's mutilation of the word.

To be fair, most places I hear the term, pronounce it correctly, with the exception of news anchors.

Follow up: similar word that drives me crazy it niche.

For the entirety of my life, I've pronounced it 'nitch' like 'bitch'. However, recently I've encountered a handful of people that pronounce it 'neesh' like 'quiche'.

Drove me up a wall. I later learned that both are correct. Neesh follows the original French, and nitch is the more common usage

Cachet is ENTIRELY different - it's a fashion industry term which means to have a distinct or unique flair (not flare).

Given that these knobs mix fasion industry and computer/military terms in an adhoc fashion probably means the obvious - they don't have a fucking clue as to what they're reporting on.

Meanwhile, I think that military fashions are pretty cool.

Indeed military fashions are cool. Speaking of which, have you seen the new Muslim Extremist Summer 2006 line of swimwear and clothing? Some really amazing stuff. Its really hard to find all the plastic explosives woven within the fabric.
