A bit of Perspective

Im no huge fan of us being in Iraq or the middle East in general. In my opinion, we had no business there - the monies could have been better spent on fixing our ragged Immigration and Naturalization system, and our border politics which would help more in the long run than plowing over Iraq. But now that we're there I am in full favor of making a parking lot out of the entire Middle East. But thats another story. Ok so back to my topic.

I continue to hear in the news headlines about how much of a quagmire our situation in Iraq has been. Really? Hrm. I found some interesting comparitive facts that put this to the test. I will use California as an example since its total population most closely matches Iraq's overall population.

Iraq has approximately 26 million residents
California has approximately 35 million residents.
This should be close enough to get some decent comparisons.

California FACTS:
6 murders DAILY
33 rapes DAILY
10 arsons DAILY
180 armed robberies DAILY
360 violent assaults DAILY

Thats on a monthly average:
180 Murders
900 Rapes
300 Arsons
5400 Armed Robberies
10800 Violent Assaults

Think Im wrong? Check out California's own state website: http://caag.state.ca.us/cjsc/keyfacts.htm because thats where I got these numbers.

The WORST numbers I can find on crime/death rates in Iraq EVEN AFTER THE WAR BEGAN is approximately 1/2 of what California experiences.

Whoa wait a minute! How can more people be killed MONTHLY in California than in Iraq? Why have I not heard about this in the news media outlets?! I dont ever recall any headlines about the 200 or so Californians that were butchered again this month.... or the month previous.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. The only thing more evil than the 3rd world dictators is the News media itself. Amazingly.. people accept what the media says and they gladly accept it as gospel without ever asking any questions. Our largest problems are not with the world abroad but within ourselves.

I think the most important factor left out in those comparrisons is the difference in culture. If California were occupied by a foreign power, with a completely different set of social and political values, I'm willing to bet that those numbers would be different.

Also, you're talking *reported* figures. And we all know that many crimes will go unreported. What might be reported in California may not get reported in Iraq as a crime. Or it might not even be a crime in Iraq. Or California.

It's apples and oranges.

The law-enforcement situations in the two countries are very different. In Iraq, we have over 130,000 American soldiers keeping order, in addition to the Iraqi army and police forces. Plus curfews, checkpoints, etc. And there's still all this violence.

I can't find statistics on the number of police in all of California. But LA has 2.4 policemen per 1000 people; since that's a major city, we'll use that as a benchmark. 35 million people in California, 2.4 policemen per 1000, that's 84000 policemen for the state.

If California doubled the size of its police department and instituted the same kind of martial law measures that are used in Iraq, I'm sure crime would plummet immediately. If Iraq had the same liberal laws as California and only 63000 police (the California number scaled by population), the situation would be even worse.

It's an interesting comparison, but in many ways it's comparing apples and oranges.

I look at it this way. If California is terrible and the media is making Iraq out to be far worse than it is...when given the option of living in either Iraq or California, which would I take? I think my answer would be pretty obvious...

what your leaving out is that those are California's crime statistics-compared with war statistics in Iraq excluding day to day crime--so I'm sure those numbers in Iraq are a bit askew when you consider the total. Either way it is really a disgusting picture of what greed, tyranny and the ensuing depair have created in our society. The same God is waiting for us ALL to shut up and start connectng from within to the Universal Spirit-wether its thru Alla, Jesus, Jehova, Buddha or whoever and begin to fulfill the promise and potential of His greatest creation--humankind. Love will conquer all.
