Staying in New Orleans? Hungry for a bit of artisan-style Italian in an artsy environment? Then Angeli on Decatur is your place... but not if you're allergic to anything, because if you are they'll treat you like trash.
You can tell when you come in that Angeli is different, even for the French Quarter. The tables are beaten, the floor is, well, at least it's not sticky, but it's food is supposedly quite good. I'll never know however, because someone in our group had a diary allergy and when we mentioned this to the server she replied that the chefs probably would not accommodate that.
Wait what? There's really nothing easier than leaving cheese off a pizza or out of a sandwich. It's just a matter of not adding the step of putting it on. The waitress said she would check with the chefs and brusquely turned away. Now, all that being said, we probably irked her when we came in with our large party (seven people) and asked if we could have separate checks or at least split the payment between us. No, and no. When we got the menu it said quite clearly that these requests were not welcome, but it did NOT say this anywhere we could see when we walked in. Since we asked before we got the menu it really shouldn't have been held against us.
When the waitress returned we were offered two items: a sandwich or a salad. In both cases the waitress said she would "pick the cheese out". Oh really. My party looked at me. I shrugged, "it's ok, maybe we can eat later" the rest of the group had already ordered a pitcher of beer and I didn't want to disturb them. But solidarity set in and the waitress was presented a choice of her own: ask the chefs NOT to put cheese on a pizza or we all leave.
We wound up leaving, not before she threw the requested check on the table and walked away in a huff. Really? Like it's someone's fucking fault that they can't eat cheese?
So here's my review for Angeli On Decatur: one finger. Guess which one.
And where we finally did eat? They split the checks, gave me a drink on the house AND made my meal without dairy. Irene's Cuisine is the name of the place, I recommended it highly. Great food, great service and no qualms about managing the needs of their customers. Five stars and two hands clapping. Bravo!
