Family

Toi Pruitt and Joe Pulliam bought a house. They intended to live there with Toi's three children.

Black Jack, Missouri say's they're not allowed to move in, despite the fact that they own the home. No, it's not condemned. No fire hazard or anything. Turns out, Joe and Toi (seriously, what kind of name is Toi?) aren't married. Oh horrors of horrors! And worse, Toi's kids, aren't Joe's.

You see, Black Jack has a rule. Only married couple can live together. The only exception to it is if the man is the biological or adoptive father of the kids. Anything else doesn't constitute a "family" by their legal definition. So, they can't get a occupancy permit to move into their own home.

Fuckchops. Yes, it's my new favorite curse word.

There's a lot of areas in which someone could point out idiocy in this scenario:

* Local laws that make one's head hurt.
* Failure of the would-be home-owners to know such laws
* Failure of the realtor to let the buyers know of such a law
* Failure of the bank to mention it when they are technically the landlord (I suspect the law is to safeguard their investment should the couple have a falling out. Kind of like how both roommates in an apartment must be qualified by the leasing office to be able to pay on-their-own should one roommate up and leave.)

Of course, I guess it's a fairly easy problem to rectify: drive over to Alabama for a quickie wedding then present the marriage certificate, get the permit and move in. Simple solution for an unlikely problem.

Apparently, somewhere in the mortgage process, this tiny ass backwater town requires an occupancy permit. The purpose is supposed to be something along the lines of "proof that the house is safe"

But then shitburgs like Black Jack toss on riders that demand that people fall into a traditional family model. For example, Toi and Joe could have 15 kids and live there "safey" if they were married. But, they're not married, so it's deemed "unsafe for occupation". Nice, eh?

Fucking buttmonkeys.
