BONG

I want to injure someone. This isn't really unusual I know. But there is a new guy here at work. Works in a nearby office. Don't know him, don't have any clue what department he works for, don't give a fuck.

You see, he has his instant messaging on. Not a big deal. But he has the volume on high enough that we can hear it 25 feet away. And every time he gets or sends a message... a little BONG like a small church bell goes off. Much louder than the standard sound for AIM and MSN and all.

Every time. He's been IMing someone for about 3 hours now. Almost constantly. My headache is not pleased with this man and his annoying ass BONGing laptop.

I was going to just bash his hands and break the laptop speakers. But then I thought that it's better to destroy the entire laptop to get rid of the wav file. Finally, I decided that the only way to be sure is to nuke him from orbit.

Damn, a laptop? If it was a desktop I'd say that was something worth staying late for, an go in an unseat his audio card - or disconnect the wires to the audio jack.

Wow, simply wow. I never even thought of that technique myself! That's one for the arsenal. The only problem is that I find the reply sound so annoying that the only sound I enable is the one when the window opens. And mine is set to "moo".

I can't imagine a suitable punishment actually, it sounds like a modern form of chinese water torture.

Hmm, so it never occurred to You to get up and ask the guy if he would mind turning down or disabling the IM notification sound because it was disruptive?

If that had failed, what would be even better would be, catching his supervisor and mentioning that Your work was being disrupted because of the constant noise from the guy's IM going off continuously for 3 hours while HE was [getting paid to be there] working.

It's the work IM system. So, he's doing work with it. It just has a ultra annoying wav attached that he's decided to play.

As for asking him, I could. However, he's one of the senior management offices. As a rule I avoid them unless I have to, particularly if I don't know who they are. It would be gauche to walk up to the CIO or something and demand he mute his laptop.

My actual solution was headphones and loud music. But I WANTED to nuke him from orbit.
