You don't say...

Destroying human life in the hopes of saving human life is not ethical -- and it is not the only option before us.

Bush said that in a speech concerning his planned veto of the new stem cell research bill.

I find it interesting. Destroying life is unethical, even to save life. Interesting position. If that is his stance, how does he mesh that with the Iraq war? Even to save lives (ours or Iraqi) it would be unethical to attack because it would destroy life (Iraqi soldiers, citizens and American soldiers). Sounds like a Gandhi-style position of non-violence to me.

I suppose they didn't consider the ramification of such a broad ethical claim?

One might suppose it hinges on his definition of "human". I propose that the president's definition of human doesn't extend to those dwelling outside of North American and the EU (and possibly Russia).

I would also suggest that even those privilidged enough to be living in those areas, if they weren't white, wealthy or invested in the energy industry they also wouldn't count as "human".

Nonetheless, you have a point, clearly it's hardly what you would expect a hawk-president to say in a time of war.

I concur. Then again, being a politician (like the Red Queen), you can change things around any way you want. Examples abound.

Is an embryo human life? I suppose in the most rigid of definitions it is. For it to ever be a meaningful life takes a willing womb and a minimum of 6 months. Until they can bring babies to viability in a device outside a woman's body the relative "humanness" of an embryo without a womb is a rather moot discussion.

I'm sure at some point artificial wombs will be possible and the possibilities frighten me. Not that a woman can choose use her own or an external womb. That will just be another step to our becoming more like God, as many a philosopher, like Nietzsche, theorized. What frightens me is what the religious zealots will do with such a device since every embryo is sacred. They are human, so they should be made human, damn the fact that they really aren't wanted.
