Units Units Everywhere

Short and sweet.

A light year is a measure of DISTANCE. Not time. Specifically the distance light travels over a a year. Google says 9,460,730,472,580 kilometers. A real long fucking way. But... still 365 days.

Parsec. It's a distance. Not knowing what the hell Han is talking about in the Star Wars movie, I don't know if he's using it correctly or not, but I know those fanboys out there fuck this one up often enough.

A league is also distance, not a depth. Stupid movie titles aside. Seeing as 20K leagues is about 111,000km, I think it's be pretty rough to be down that far. Since you know, you'd come out the other side of the planet.

For depth, you probably want fathoms (6 feet). Of course, 20K fathoms is 36 km and the Marianas trench is 11 km, so it's still wrong. But hey, at least it's in the right ballpark.

(from Wikipedia)

"The smoot is a nonstandard unit of length created as part of an MIT fraternity prank. It is named after an MIT fraternity pledge to Lambda Chi Alpha, Oliver R. Smoot (class of 1962), who in October, 1958 was used by his fraternity brothers to measure the length of the Harvard Bridge between Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. One smoot is equal to his height (five feet and seven inches -- 1.70 m), and the bridge's length was measured to be "364.4 smoots plus one ear". Smoot repeatedly lay down on the bridge, let his companions mark his new position in chalk or paint, and then got up again. Eventually, he tired from all this exercise and was thereafter carried by the fraternity brothers to each new position. Everyone walking across the bridge today sees painted markings indicating how many smoots they are from the Boston-side river bank. The marks are repainted each year by the incoming associate member class (similar to pledge class) of Lambda Chi Alpha"

Wait, who exactly though 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a reference to depth vs. the length of the Nautilus' journey? PLEASE tell me that they were 8 years old or something. O_o

You'd be amazed how many people think that. It hurts my brain and makes me fear for the human race.
