Maryland ignores voters

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland officially became the first state in the nation Tuesday to approve a plan to give its electoral votes for president to the winner of the national popular vote, instead of the candidate chosen by state voters.

That's some seriously fucked up logic right there. Conceivably, every single person in the state could vote republican and if a democrat won the majority of the country's vote, suddenly, Maryland's electoral college votes will go to the Democrat. Someone that didn't earn the votes in Maryland.

I get what they're going for. I just don't think this achieves their goal. Instead of making people care about politics and the importance of their vote, it's demonstrating that no matter what they vote, it's the the rest of the country that really matters. They'll be included in that count of course, but only as a percentage of the whole

Instead of being fully in control of your states voice, you just pimped it out to the will of the nation. It's fucked up on lots of levels. Just wait until the first time this law changes the course of a national election. I think MD is traditionally left leaning. Wait until those votes go to a republican. And if it's the difference (ala 2000)... You'll damn sure make your citizens care then. They'll care enough to light the courthouse on fire.

From the third paragraph in the article:
"The plan would only take effect if states representing a majority of the nation's 538 electoral votes decided to make the same change."

It's actually a clever plan. For now, nothing will change. But when similar laws are adopted in states totaling 269 electoral votes, the plan will go into effect. Then the states who have passed this law will all award their electoral votes based on the popular vote, meaning that the winner of the popular vote will also win the electoral vote.

But remember, until that happens, nothing changes. For now, Maryland will award its electoral votes to the winner of the Maryland election only. This preserves the voting rights of the people of Maryland, and provides a method to popularly elect the president eventually. It's an excellent idea.

Yeah, I saw that about 15 minutes after I posted. But I didn't feel like deleting the rant or correcting it. I just decided it was a misfire :)

Excellent post and rant.

This is hopefully yet another reason that may light the congressional fires of passion to get rid of the stupid electoral college. The idea has come up many times but whichever party is in power at the time always fails to deliver. Both parties are afraid that they will need it at some point in the future. Its funny how it only comes up in discussion again when the losing party realizes they could have won without it. The electoral college, much like labor unions, was a good idea many moons ago - however its time has come; its antiquated, overrated and simply impractical in today's political environment.
