Zombie Altars

I've been told I'm cold and heartless. It's not true, but I don't generally argue it. I accept that I have a slightly skewed view of certain things.

For example, Zombie altars. My girlfriend dubbed them that, and I think the name is very fitting. You’ve probably seen them on the side of the road. John Smith gets killed in a car accident, and a grieving wife, father or brother or someone sets up a little shrine at the site to commemorate his life. They put up a cross. A plaque. Some flowers. Stuffed bear. Maybe a photo. Sometimes this little zombie altar hangs around for two or three years. In rare cases, it passes the decade mark.

I don’t get it. Well, that’s not entirely true. I understand the need to grieve and mourn. I can even vaguely understand the desire to put flowers or something at the site of the accident. What I don’t get are the people that erect crosses, small mangers, and elaborate signs and tend them year after year like it was some sort of gravesite.

John’s dead. As a person, you must mourn his loss. But you seriously need to move on with your life. It’s not healthy to come back every other week and do upkeep on a small patch of the highway where he died.

Or of course, there are the mobile altars. They get some company to etch the glass, or create a sticker for the back window of their car. Usually reads exactly like a gravestone.

“Bob Tindel June 1 1971 – June 1 2002 beloved brother, son and all around great guy”

Another case of people needing to let go. It’s not healthy to see a constant reminder of your loved one in your rear view mirror, k? Once again, these little mobile altars can be seen years and years after the actual death.

At some point, someone needs to take these people aside and try to shake life and death into them. Their loved ones are gone. Remember them, sure. But there comes a point where mourning goes WAY WAY past healthy release. It becomes obsession.

I have a post - somewhere - on the same topic. I have all the same beefs, and more (I'm willing to admit heartlessness because in this case it's stupid and egocentric to presume that everyone fucking CARES how you feel).

First, people die all the time. They die all over, in their homes, hospitals, even on fucking Amtrack trains. If the site of every death needs a fucking memorial then there wouldn't be a place to stand anywhere without desicrating someone's place of mortis.

Next, like I said before it's arrogant. I'm sorry someone you knew died but we have a place to remember them, it's called cemetary.

Recently a pregnant lady died on a main road. Her family put up crosses for her and the potential baby - but the crosses are on private property. Now the business that owns that property is stuck with caring for the crosses, mowing around them, raking, etc.. I don't think that's fair - the business had nothing to do with the stupid bitch in the SUV that drove into oncoming traffic that was the cause of the crash. But the business is screwed, people have sympathy for what happened so they're oblidged to care for the shrine.

There's worse cases. Some fucktard put up a massive reflective cross in the median of a major route. At night, in the left lane your headlights would be reflected with such intensity it was hard to see. Nothing like trying to cause other people to crash at the same site to engender sympathy.

It's bullshit, people need to get a grip and understand that while it's sad that someone they knew died - people die all the time. And everyone else in the world isn't obliged to care.

The worst one I've ever seen in about a mile from my house. It's a honest to God manger. Stands about 3 foot tall with a little steeple roof and a light on top. A cross on either side. And some really shiny things inside the manger. Never got a good look at them to see exactly what they were. Initially I thought it was a Christmas decoration, but further inspection reveals the Zombie Altar nature. It has a guys name, birth and death listed on it.

Stunned.
