A handful of men sitting in a hot room. Pondering the rights of man. The role of government. And a concept of freedom.

It’s revolutionary if you think about it. Pardon the pun.

Fifty six people representing 13 British Colonies. Their punishment for their treason would have been certain death. But each put their lives on the line for the chance, just the chance that they could break free of the chains that England demanded.

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Thirty five words to change the world forever. The ideas were not obvious to the people of the time, though we do consider them so now. But at the time, the concepts behind life and liberty were rarely spoken outside philosopher’s papers.

Reflecting back upon those men sitting in that hot Philadelphia courthouse, it’s hard to imagine the depth of their actions. Their punishment was certain. Their success was doubtful at best. The outcome of their actions was unforeseeable. All they knew is that they must try.

I think they would like this nation they birthed.

I take this opportunity to offer my thanks to a group of men, who used the courage of their convictions to change the world.
