Personal Space

Maybe I'm weird. If you ask my girlfriend, she'll say there is no maybe about it. I am weird.

And this is a case of something that just irks me. The place I work is a 24 by 7 place. We share the same desks and workstations. Due to the nature of the shared environment, we each have our own set lockable of drawers to hold personal items, paperwork, that sort of thing.

So, if you recall from an earlier rant, we have to wear headphones if we want to listen to the radio, so that the noise doesn't bother other people on the floor. I have a set of ear buds. I prefer ear buds because I can put one in and have my other ear free to hear the other people I work with.

Now, apparently, at the end of last week, I forgot to lock my cabinets. Totally my fault. However, what annoyed me is that when I came in today, I found that my ear buds had been used. I know, because I carefully wrap them up and twist tie them, and I found them casually strewn about. Plus... well.. let's just say there was wax.

Ew.

So, today, I'm more or less SOL. I'm kinda unwilling to use these buds again. Unless I can figure some way to clean them. Doubtful.

The gist of my anger here is that it's personal space. Not just someone else's property that this guy used. But it's something that goes in my ears. I don't know about the rest of you, but that's my personal space, and it's more of a violation than if they had borrowed some of my books or other supplies.

I suppose it's not obvious to everyone. Maybe I'm just weird.

I don't think that's weird. Indeed - these are things you stick in your ear. I wouldn't want someone elses ear crud all over my headphones. But then again maybe they just *thought* about using them and put them back. I imagine some germ killin cleaning stuff and a new set of foam covers may help.

But underneath all of this is the idea that someone got into your stuff. And consider this... since you *normally* locked your desk drawers, this probably means that this person had been repeatedly trying to get into your (or other peoples) stuff - tugging on multiple drawers numerous times to see just what one would open.

Oh wait - you did say there was wax. Definitely bad.

yeah, and I know it's not my wax. Not only because I keep my ears clean, but because it's on both buds. I never put the second one in and I always use the same one (different color wires)

I recommend a cleansing fire fueled by the bones of the savage who committed such a breach of hygiene and etiquette.

That's just so insanely wrong I don't know how you didn't go postal on someone. I simply can't fathom that some fucktard would actually borrow your earbuds and put them back, it's unbelievable.

I agree with Lara.

I'd go postal, but it could be any of 6 people. Too hard to tell who did it.

Dude, You watch Venture Brothers I know it. Use The Monarch's methods to determine the culprit and the five shall give up the one...

actually I don't watch it regularly, but I've seen one or two episodes.

I sent out a little group email about it. I was nice and didn't copy management about it. Didn't even mention the headphones speicifically. Just a vague "other people's stuff" type deal.

I can be overwhelmingly nice in a corporate enviornmnet. It makes it more shockign when I stab them in the back later.

I'd leave the earbuds out with a note saying: "Gift to the nosy, unclean individual who used these without my prior permission. Please note that an unlocked drawer does not imply permission to look in my drawer, and if you do peek, absolutely does not imply permission to use anything you find. P.S. - atleast clean the crud out of your ears, dirtbag."
