International Relief Fund?

So, Hurricane Katrina has caused billions of dollars in damage. We have entire cities under water that is still rising. No fresh water for huge areas. Electricity’s out. Millions of refugees displaced. 12-15k people trapped inside an arena with no means of leaving.

So um... where is everyone? I mean, the American Red Cross, and other local / national aid groups are getting together to help out. But the international Red Cross doesn't even mention the disaster. Where is the donation from France, who criticized America for its initial relief efforts during the tsunami? Maybe Canada's Navy will hop on down to the gulf to help provide fresh water? Or maybe China will ante up and provide an aid package? No? Heh. Go figure.

I guess we don't qualify for aid, eh? I suppose only people in third world have disasters.

Sure, we can do it on our own. We're American's and we're tough that way. We make our way on our own. But that doesn't mean I don't get to point out how hypocritical the international community can be.

It's only an international disaster if the United States wasn't affected by it. Anything that happens to the U.S. is the U.S.'s problem alone.

I'm waiting for France to criticize us for some random reason, while sitting on their asses. Then again, I don't expect a single country to help out, despite the hundreds of thousands of lives ruined in this catastrophe. We are a world superpower, after all - why would the international community help?

International aid? I don't think so.

Word Rou...

I'm sure that Wonder Woman or Green Lantern would roll up if Superman was in trouble, but no

It depends on which Green Lantern you're talkin' about Larathiel. Guy Gardner would prolly tell Superman to fuck off.

From today's Washington Post:

"French emergency relief officials met to consider what French "operational assets" were in a position to help, particularly from the Caribbean island of Antilles, the French Embassy in Washington said in a statement. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder today issued a government-wide call to determine what assistance could be provided to the United States, the German Embassy said in a statement."

From Yahoo News: "Les offres d'aide affluent, de France, d'Italie, du Canada, du Mexique, de Russie."

Translation: "The help offer are arriving from France, Italie, .."

You guys bitch for nothing...
The white house has not yet accepted help from any other country's as of yet.

Pre-bitching at things which didn't happen and for the wrong reason.. Pathetic in regards of the devastation and cruel reality they are facing over there. That sucks.

No, I timed my bitching at the appropriate time. The hurricane hit on Monday. By Wednesday, I expect more than plans for meetings to think about relief or support. By Thursday, I think those offers should be made. This is especially true when we received complaints from those same French folks about our contributions the day after the tsunami, despite the fact that we already had moved aircraft carriers and pledged considerable amounts of money and promised more to come.

Like I said, I don't expect many countries to come out and do much. They know we're pretty self sufficeint without their help, with the possible exception of oil. And I expect we’ll turn down most offers of financial aid. But I do enjoy the pointing out the hypocrisy.

Funny, I do enjoy the pointing out the hypocrisy, and that's what I did, on concrete fact, not on supposition.
