To license or not license, that is the question.

To license or not license, that is the question.

Herr Eliot Spitzer, Governor of New York, thinks its a keen idea to give illegal aliens a drivers license. The plan is to suspend the need for a social security card to get a driver's license. The State Assembly Leader, Jim Tedisco, is suing the Gov since it violates and existing State law. Herr Spitzer is quickly becoming known for his "my way or the highway attitude" and that can set a few folks on edge. Furthermore, on the surface, any one can understand the "we don't want to encourage these darn illegals to come and stay" attitude.

HELLO!!!!!! They are here. They are driving. Its not like Herr Spitzer is proposing to stand at the border and pass out licenses like party favors. Also consider - with how lovely the pictures on the licenses are, one wet-back looks like another and I've heard of one illegal getting a fake license and passing it around to his hermanos. Some households may share a car, well, damn, why not share a driver's license, too. Put it in the visor, kinda like the garage remote. So illegals ARE driving with "licenses", "licenses" that are good enough fakes to fool your average beat cop.

So, to me, here is the real choice - The status quo, where illegals are driving, uninsured and with out a proper license OR give illegals who can produce proper identification a respectable, albeit limited, driver's license. So which is it?

I understand the angst when it comes to providing social services at the cost of the tax payer, however obtaining a drivers license doesn't fall into that category. What a drivers license enables a person to do is to prove they have the driving skills to be allowed on the road. Removing social security as a valid form of ID really doesn't do much in terms of whether a person will actually drive or not. The fact is that in most area's - except the extremely urban - people need to drive to live, to work, to go to school, to reach a hospital.

Would I rather have someone on the road that has taken a test to prove they understand the signs and signals, not to mention shown the basic skills necessary to maneuver the vehicle? Yes of course.

For those that are put off by the concept that giving out drivers licenses without a social security number, keep in mind there are other communities in the US that are religous in nature that probably don't have them either.

Finally, if there really is a rub about giving out a valid form of ID to someone who doesn't have a SS#, why not just put a marker on the drivers license? Something that says - please request a second form of ID from this person when used for travel, exams, employment, etc.

For some reason, this is a big issue to some people. It's amazing how insane people can get over illegal immigration.

I saw someone yesterday ranting about how if we give illegal immigrants drivers' licenses, then they'll be able to vote! And then they'll destroy our entire democratic system! Apparently this person was not aware that voting has nothing to do with having a drivers' license. Requiring an ID to vote is illegal. Illegal immigrants could vote right now if they wanted to! And yet they don't. Despite the Bush justice department's efforts to root out voter fraud, they've never actually found evidence of any.

So, there's another failed attempt at anti-immigrant demagoguery. What's next? "If we give them drivers' licenses, they'll be able to prove it's their birthday, and get free dessert from TGI Friday's! THE HORROR! BUILD A FENCE!"
