Who is really the problem?

Read. Discuss.

Imus is a jackass. He always has been a jackass. To make him even less relevant, he is a dried-up, has-been jackass who should consider retirement before he embarrasses himself even more. So he called the black members of a basketball team a few names. He thought he was funny. He wasn't. However, it is also hypocritical of the black community to nail him for something they embrace and find "cutting edge" if it were from a black entertainer. Al Sharptons and Jessie Jacksons of the world, call out some of the antics of black entertainers. For example, I find David Chappelle offensive. Grossly offensive. I'm not black. I can not profess to know exactly what it is like to be black. But ANY entertainer that picks out a race or culture and degrades it is offensive. I'm not talking about some good natured teasing - I make fun of my cultural heritage all the time. However, the nasty jabs I have seen black entertainers make at black culture are far, far worse then few very poorly chosen words by some has-been.

So, I don't want to hear anymore complaining from the black community until they at least criticize a few of their own for degrading the black community's image and making cheap pop-shots. Chappelle - skits about a black KKK member - not funny. Any number of male rappers calling women bitches and 'hos - not funny - these are your mothers, sisters and daughters. Female hip hop singers talking about being a good fuck as the only way to keep their man - not funny. The black people I know are hard working and conscientious - they deserve to be characterized better than how "pop-culture" characterizes them. As much as a group of young ladies on a college basketball team did not deserve to be called "nappy-headed 'hos".

It's an odd thing about a culture - people who "belong" feel it's ok demean their brethren because, well they're demeaning themselves at the same time. So that makes it ok right? If I'm black I can use all the epithets that whites can't -because- I'm black. It's like calling yourself an idiot, do you dare people to agree with you?

Still I look at other cultures, asians, muslims, hispanics. While none were as famously exploited as the africans they too suffered at various stages - and to an extent still suffer from the being "not white anglo-saxon" today. Yet I don't see muslims calling themselves towel-heads in public, hispanics addressing each other as wet-backs or asians referring to their ancestors as gooks.

Perhaps there is a certain liberation in claiming as your own some of the more hurtful and negative stereotypes and bringing them out into the light. But it's very much another to embrace them as an essential part of who you are and who you want to be a part of.

I thought this was pretty funny...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070418/ap_en_tv/people_chappelle_1

Chappelle walked out on the third season of his hit Comedy Central show last May, leaving fans and industry observers to question his motives and even his sanity.

He has said since that he didn't feel he could be himself on the show.

"The bottom line was, white people own everything, and where can a black person go and be himself or say something that's familiar to him and not have to explain or apologize?" he told Esquire magazine.

I'm really trying to figure out how Dave could NOT be himself. Does he have some other brand of humor that is more racially based and sophomoric than what was portrayed on his show?

Sorry Dave, but I need an explanation. Methinks the double standard is a little too tiresome.

Didn't we have a problem with Coca-Cola translating incorrectly a few years back?

This was purely an accident. An unfortunate accident, but still and accident. Along with my previous rant, people also need to quit giving words more power than intent. It someone says something out of error or ignorance, let it go! Focus on people who say horrible things, and mean them, and could those things could be said with the most polite sounding language ever.
