Elderly Driver

Now, I do not object to elderly drivers. Heck, my grandfather is 93 and still drives. Rather well I might add. That being said some elderly drivers should be either off the road or at least have the good sense to NOT drive during rush hour.

I was driving to work the other morning. I get near an intersection where there is fork and traffic lights. Well, this elderly driver, who was going "straight" (like me) stops about three car lengths behind the car infront of him. There is plenty of space to get around the car in front of him and go straight. He sits there. I'm not sure what he is doing. While I am trying to decide if it safe to go around this guy, road rage yahoo whips around me just as old man decides to go forward. They almost collide.

After the light, old man pulls toward the shoulder, not quite on, but I'm not taking any more chances so I take my opportunity to get the hell away from him. Then he cuts off the people behind me.

Next light, he stops behind me - again about 3 car lengths behind me.

OK, dude. Either give up the damn drivers license - because you obviously aren't even confident in your own driving skills anymore - or stay the fuck home during rush hour. I don't want to be on the damn road during rush hour, but I have bills to pay and I have to be there. So do the rest of us smucks. Go shopping, go to the doctor, go golfing, later in the day. What else ya got to do anyway!

Well there's a problem. Old people vote. And they're bitchy. They take any sort of common sense safety as a personal assault on their rights and go raging to their representatives threatening bloody murder if there's the suggestion that their doctor might be better qualified than they are in making the decision if they should still be behind the wheel. There have been lots of articles in the news where this issue has been raised and seniors are the first to scream that they moved to Florida, Mass, wherever.. because of the breaks for elderly and that not having a car would kill them. In some states family members can suggest to doctors that a grand-relative is unfit... but it still comes down to confronting the person at some point, and no one likes to do this.

Still there are more and more incidents of elderly people taking out bus stops, bystanders and entire farmers markets. America is aging, one has to suppose that it will take more incidents for the rest of the public to want something done.

I had a similar problem about 2 years ago. One morning I left my house and found myself behind this guy driving about 15 in a 30 - where I'd normally be doing about 45. It was a 2-lane residential street so I didn't want to speed past him....That was on day one.

Later in the week I had the misfortune of finding myself behind him again. This time, I passed him and honked. Where the hell are you going at 7 am that can't wait until after rush hour? You're obviously not in any hurry to get there on time.

My grandfather also drives and he's in his late 80's. He's a Cadillac man and won't give up driving. But he's also a good driver and he also avoids driving at high volume times (and moved himself to a retirement community).
