My Mom told me about a friend's elderly friend of the family - a man is in his late 70's, never married, never had kids, and spent most of his life at sea as a merchant marine. He saved all his money for a comfortable retirement and currently lives in an assisted living arrangement. This man has two nephews who obviously don't want to wait for the poor, old bastard to kick to get their hands on his money. They have initiated a competency proceeding so that they can be put in charge of his substantial portfolio and other assets. First step is an assessment, which was done by a woman.
Septuagenarian man who spent his life at sea - hmmm - not much experience around women. Plus, his generation was much more polite than even my parents' generation. This nice woman was asking questions and rather than ask who the hell she was and why she was asking stupid questions, he tried to comply. This woman asked him what day it was and to draw a clock at 9 o'clock. Conclusion - he's obviously lost his mind because he didn't know the date and the hands on the clock evidently appeared to be of similar lengths. I've heard of these "tests" before and they frighten me.
I frequently need to look at a calendar to know the date. Usually say to myself "shit its already such and such?" I work and I don't know what day it is until MS Word tells me. I'm sure I will not give a rats ass what day it is when I'm retired. As far as the clock test is concerned - wonder if this bitch ever played any of a number of games that require drawing pictures of simple items. I know, for a fact, that a number of my friends would not pass the clock test!
Do these as test of "competency" frighten anyone else?
