Radio Free Santa

I hate Christmas. I just want to get that out of the way early. I hate practically every part of it: the commercialism, the focus on Santa, the idea that everyone in the country wants to hear about Jesus, and the fact that it's completely unavoidable. Which brings me to my point: Christmas music. Some of the traditional songs are decent. Most of the music is horrible, and wouldn't ever get any airplay if it weren't Christmas-specific. But somewhere out there, there must be people who love Christmas music. And for some reason, the whole world caters to them.

It's bad enough that the malls play nothing but Christmas music. If I'm at the mall in December, fighting through the hordes of shoppers who just have to find the perfect pre-packaged gift for everyone they know, I'm in a bad mood. I don't need to hear Mariah Carey crooning a shitty version of a "holiday standard" that a billion other people have covered. It makes me feel sorry for the people who work in the department stores and don't have a choice but to listen to that crap.

But what really gets on my nerves is the radio stations. It used to be that, as it got closer and closer to Christmas, most stations would mix in more Christmas music. That's tolerable. I understand why people want to occasionally listen to that kind of thing, and I could always change the channel. But the new trend is to play nothing but Christmas music. And I'm not talking about during the week before the holiday, or even the whole month of December. A station here in Boston, which I usually listen to, is now playing 24/7 Christmas music, starting more than a week before Thanksgiving! So to satisfy the handful of Christmas fanatics who want to hear the same tired old songs for 6 weeks, they alienate all their listeners who don't want to think about Christmas yet. I hate Christmas.

While I don't necessarily share the same hate of christmas overall that you do, there are 2 things I definitely share the dread of, and thats the malls, and christmas music. Count yourself fortunate that your exposure to it is limited to malls and flipping thru the radio. My wife (and her mother) love christmas music in all its forms. Old, new, shitty, and shittier, it starts playing in my house and in the car sometimes as early as the day after halloween.

I don't realy mind some of the old time stuff like Nat King Cole and others since I grew up on that as a kid and it brings up some fond memories. But God save me from the 'Nature Christmas' cd, the techno cd, various crappy artists doing christmas songs like a country artist or 2...the list goes on. I think I'm getting a headache just thinking about it...

Say, maybe while You are in the mall You should make Brookstone Your first stop and see if they have one of those headsets that nullifies sound. That might make the rest of Your shopping trip less painful.

As for the radio, I suspect the reason they do that is pressure from advertisers who want to get people in the shopping mood so they can have a big turn-out at stores on "Black Friday". I wonder if phoning in to the station and saying how You will purposefully boycott those stores would get others to wake up to Your plight.

Fortunately for me, I don't actually listen to the radio and I usually like Christmas music anyway (nice getting to practice singing some more traditional songs). Speaking of which, I think I'm going to break out the Trans Syberian Orchestra CDs again. Thanks for the reminder. ;)

I enjoy Christmas music. But I have rules. Not until December and generally not new pop crap remakes. There have been a bare handful of decent additions the to Christmas music catalog over the past decade.

That said, I'm with you about the commercial aspect of the thing. I hate shopping and buying crap for people. I just think there has to be an better way to celebrate the holiday.

Of course, it doesn't help that 3 states worth of shoppers flock to my local mall to avoid playing sales taxes in their own state. It's practically unbearable from Nov 20th forward. Online shopping, here I come!!

The trend of having Christmas Season start as early as Halloween is stupid. I went to buy candy for trick-or-treaters and a Salvation Army ringer was out. Blashemy!

Larathiel, what's with the capitalization of "You"? I'm not sure what you mean by it, but I'm guessing it's not a compliment.

Abba,

Scan any one of Larathiel's posts. The word "you" is pretty much always capitalized.

So uh... it's not just You. Heh.

I capitalize "You" for the same reason I capitalize "I". It's a matter of respect though don't expect anyone else to do so.

That being the case, I'm curious as to why Your gut reaction would be to presume that it's something uncomplimentary.

Well, it wasn't a compliment. So I was right.

The only time I'm aware of "You" being capitalized is in hymns, or other places where the person being spoken to is God. So when you do that in normal posts, it doesn't come off as a sign of respect; it looks like you're sarcastically referring to the other person as God. Like you're mocking them for being self-important. Maybe I'm the only one who misinterprets it that way.
