Green Beer Day

It's Saint Patrick's day again. I hate this holiday. It's just an excuse for people to throw a big stupid party. It's not even just for Irish-Americans anymore; everyone's expected to wear green and care about a minor saint's day. Also, the celebration isn't even authentically Irish. In Ireland, people traditionally celebrated by praying and getting together with family. No green beer, no wild parties, no leprauchan decorations. But Americans had to turn it into a faux-Irish Mardi Gras.

I never need an excuse to drink, but I'll take any one I get.

Ah the American process of marketization. Given the opportunity to take ANY theme at all, religous, seasonal, cultural, whatever - we can cheapen and laminate it into a series of trashy plastic lawn ornaments and window stickers available at any party store to enhance the decor of any mobile home.

You haven't lived however until you see leprechaun hats made out of translucent plastic with magazine centerfolds trapped within the plastic like pressed penthouse butterflys. It makes you realize just how special living in the US can be....

Interestingly, while St. Patrick's Day is mostly American, the Irish also profit from marketing their culture.

This article describes how an Irish-owned company builds nearly identical Irish pubs all around the world, all selling the same idea of Irish good cheer.
